This lovely city was under the upstanding government of House of Este from the 13th to the end of the 16th century, renewed as the “first modern city in Europe” thanks to the grandiose urban addition planned in the middle of the 15th century by Borso I of Este.
The elegant Estense Castle dating back to 1385 is the heart of Ferrara’s historic centre. The monumental “Palazzo dei Diamanti” (Palace of Diamonds) is one of the most famous buildings of Renaissance era and houses Ferrara’s renaissance masterpieces, as well as, other temporary exhibitions. Furthermore, painter Giovanni Boldini, one of the greatest interpreters of elegance and femininity during the Belle Epoque in Paris, was born in Ferrara.
